Dr. Manon Spaander is a board-certified gastroenterologist and associate professor in Gastroenterology at the Department of Gastroenterology of the Erasmus University Medical Center in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. She acts as a regional coordinator for the Dutch screening organization in the South- West of the Netherlands. And has contributed to the development of the Dutch National FIT based colorectal screening program. This effort was rewarded with the Felix Burda Award for medicine and science in 2017.
CRC screening in the Netherlands – from pilot studies to a National CRC screening program
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a major cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Colonoscopy with early detection and removal of adenomatous polyps reduces CRC-related mortality and incidence. At present, more and more CRC screening programs are implemented. This presentation highlights issues to consider when implementing a CRC screening program based on the experience of the Dutch CRC screening program and attempts to give an overview of current status of screening programs in Europe.
